"A storm surge, storm flood, tidal surge or storm tide is a coastal flood or tsunami-like phenomenon of rising water commonly associated with low-pressure weather systems, such as tropical cyclones. It is measured as the rise in water level above the normal tidal level, and does not include waves". Wikipedia
There is no doubt about tye fact that the coastal community in question is already experiencing the devastating effects of the ocean surge as families are already being displaced. Properties worth millions of Naira are already being washed away and if proactive measures are not taken as soon as possible, the Alpha Beach (Okun Alfa) experience may also play out in Idotun community.
Nation building is the responsibility of everyone in any society and it is safe to say that the role of youths can not be relegated to the background. Vibrant and proactive youths are the drivers of development through innovative and problem solving skills.
It is definitely on this note that the National Youth Council of Nigeria, Lekki Local Branch executives visited the community to assess the level of damage done by the surge. It was said that up to 50 houses have been destroyed by the surge which can not be unconnected with the development of the Lekki Seaport. The Youths however urged all stakeholders from the Local government to come together and find a lasting solution to the environmental menace.
"At least fifty (50) houses has been destroyed by the waves of the sea. This was caused based on the New Development brought by the government (Lekki Seaport)".
" We are now urge our leaders in lekki LCDA, Local government Chairman, our SA on commerce and industry, our MHR,Our House of Assembly, Lagos State government together with the Federal government to come to our aid and find a befitting solution to the problem unground", AMB.HON.ADELAJA OLUWAKEMI said.
As the ample importance of housing in the lives of humans can not be over emphasised,
It is hoped that government, well meaning individuals and private organisations will come to the aid of displaced persons to provide succor to them.
