Dear amiable readers keen on having a first hand experience, awareness and advocacy against #FGM, I have been away for a while now and trust me, I am back with stories from around Africa.
Please enjoy and spread the news, very important.
President George Weah's Address to the 75th UN General Assembly:
"On the issue of ending #FGM, for the first time in our country, traditional leaders have agreed to take ownership for ending this harmful practice. This has resulted into a first-of-its-kind suspension of the activities of all traditional bush schools in Liberia, where this harmful practice is carried out.
Also, we recently passed into law the Domestic Violence Act; a legal instrument that seeks to abolish all forms of violence meted out against women and children."
HAVE YOU HEARD OF HYENA MEN?
'Sexual Cleansing' is a common harmful practice in some African countries where a girl is expected to have sex after her first period; they are forced to have sex with a paid sex worker known as a "Hyena Man" once they reach puberty.
The practise is common in parts of Zambia, Malawi, Uganda, Tanzania, Mozambique, Angola, Ivory Coast and Congo.
It's viewed as a way to ritually cleanse girls after their first period, often within a 3-day window.
Some families tell girls they'll die or get diseased if they don't have sex with a HYENA.
A man from Chiwaridzo (Zimbabwe) removed his daughter's pants to check if she's still a virgin; he inspected her (fondled her genitals to see if the hymen is still there) and asked her to leave the room!
Virginity Test is so common in Zimbabwe (and over 20 countries in the world) that Archbishop Johannes Ndanga said, "Girls as young as 12 are examined by church elders.
If a man marries a woman who is not a virgin, she must then find a virgin for her husband to marry in a polygamous union as compensation."
BRAVE LAGOS WOMAN ABSCONDS FROM HOME TO PROTECT HER DAUGHTERS FROM FGM.
A woman (Mrs Oyeronke Adams) who ran away with her 3 daughters and refused #FGM on the eldest one (Mariam Adams) in accordance to their family traditions has been declared WANTEDFace vomiting by the Dada Bakare and Alarape Aligbangba families of Ajah in Eti-Osa LGA.
Mrs Oyeronke opposed their decision to force her daughter into an early marriage in 2018 as well as her circumcision as part of the preparation for the marriage; they are blaming her for the mishap in their families.
Dear @lagosstategov pls take note of this.
