BSUTH cuts off lady’s breast only to later find out that she does not have cancer
A lady, identified as Serah Shimenenge Yugh, is raising misdiagnoses awareness and seeking justice against the Benue State University Teaching Hospital after she lost one of her breasts due to an error in diagnosis during her NYSC in 2017.
According to Foundation for Investigative Journalism, FIJ, Miss Yugh only found out about the error after already undergoing 8 chemotherapy sessions, 25 rounds of radiotherapy and a single mastectomy on her left breast.
It was at the National Hospital, Abuja, that her oncologist pointed out discrepancies in the results she presented. According to the oncologist, her tumour marker test showed that she was clear of cancer.
Subsequent back and forth between the two hospitals and the involvement of an NGO, Project PINK BLUE, later confirmed that she indeed never had cancer.
She was later offered a breast reconstruction surgery and a job during a meeting with the then Commissioner for Health, Benue State, but she rejected both offers because she saw it as a ploy to silence her.
The lady, who lost her relationship and her dream to pursue a Ph.D, during the saga, also insisted on knowing how she would cope with the side effects of the chemotherapy, radiotherapy and drugs she was taking. 📸: FIJ

Why I slapped my colleague, Fathia Balogun, at a recent event – Actress Remi Surutu
Actress Remi Surutu has opened up on her fight with her colleague, Faithia Williams. The duo had reportedly clashed at a party after Surutu approached Faithia to confront her about things she had heard her say about her.
Speaking with City People, Surutu, confirmed she confronted and even slapped Faithia at the party which was organised by London based star, Bamidele Omosehin, to iron out their issues in the way she saw fit.
According to her, “My fight with Fathia Williams started when I began hearing all manner of jargons, she was saying about me. I heard she’s been going about running me down in the presence of many of our colleagues and movie producers. She’s messing up big time and somebody needed to put her in a place where she belongs.
This is the person I took in like a sister. We were very close when she joined the industry. I can say it boldly that I was instrumental to her relationship with Saidi Balogun then. They were both living with me in Magodo. I had to send them out because they always fight, and they almost injured my mum.
I don’t know why she suddenly grow that hatred for me and started running me down. Till date, I still can not say what I’ve done to deserve that from her. There are so many other things she did that I can’t say here.
Faithia is so full of herself, probably because they used to deceive her, by calling her the Queen of all the Actresses, “Pelu awon tani”. I decided to confront her and deal with her at that event, because somebody needed to call her to order. And God saved her that day and thank God for the intervention of other colleagues around. I told her “if you move closer to me, I will break bottle on your head”
When people started calling us to settle it amicably, I told them I am not ready to settle anything with her, and I don’t feel remorseful for attacking her. I have no regret at all, she’s really messing up and she needed to be put in her place.”

Pastor charged for allegedly raping 14-yr-old member, sells church building and relocates
A pastor, Chris McDouglas Omosokpea of Peculiar Generation Assembly Church, Oshodi, Lagos, who’s facing a charge for the rape of his member’s teen daughter has allegedly sold his church building and fled to an unknown place to establish another church.
SaharaReporters reports that Omosokpea had allegedly s*xually abused a 14-year-old girl for the past four years before he was arrested in June 2020 and charged before the court for defilement. He was, however, granted bail on health grounds before the Lagos High Court.
Omosokpea didn’t show up in court when the case came up again on Tuesday, March 2. The Presiding Magistrate, Kubeinje, subsequently adjourned the case till April 21, 2021.

However, when she could no longer bear it, she started threatening to commit suicide over the trauma and was persuaded to open up on what she was passing through. It was then she opened up and told her parents that Pastor Douglas had abused her for the past four years and instilled fear into her not to tell anyone.
SaharaReporters learnt that Omosokpea had allegedly established another church in an undisclosed location at Lekki, Lagos.

Mom arrested for brutalizing her son and locking him up for months in Lagos
The Lagos State Police Command have arrested one Peace Onyebuchi, for allegedly brutalising her 6-year-old son and locking him up.
According to SaharaReporter, Onyebuchi had him in her first relationship but is currently married to another man who is in the Gambia in search of greener pastures. It’s alleged that she hits her son's head against the wall at the slightest provocation.
It was alleged by Onyebuchi's neighbours that she started beating the young boy since he was four years old. They added that the recent assault lasted for close to two hours as the minor sustained several injuries on his head, face, shoulders, and back.
The incident which occurred at Ekunpa, Ojo LGA of Lagos, was reported to a human rights group, Advocates for Children and Vulnerable People's Network, by a concerned neighbour.
The neighbour said, “This boy is Divine. He doesn't attend school anymore. Presently, Divine is looked up in a room by his mum. This torture has been going on since when Divine was four years old. His father is presently in the Gambia in search of greener pastures.
I was not even aware of the issue until recently when my landlord's daughter told me about it. I immediately told the landlord who didn't take the issue lightly; he immediately mobilised all the neighbours to her door and demanded that she should bring out the boy so we could see him, at least to be sure he was still alive.
I used to see Divine in 2019 whenever he was going to school. He was a very fine young boy. He was very healthy and alive but since I had not been seeing him, I assumed he was not around. Little did we know she had been locking him up. When the landlord asked the mother to bring him out, what we saw was horrible.”

EPE MATERNAL, CHILDCARE CENTRE TO BE COMPLETED IN TWO MONTHS.
Epe Community Must Protect This Asset- P.S, Ministry of Health.
By Babatunde Kaka.
It is indeed heartwarming to realise that the Epe Maternal and Childcare Centre (MCC), would be finally completed and opened for public use to residents in Epe.
Ekohotblog gathered that the Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusegun Ogboye, disclosed this during an inspection tour of the specialist facility. He stated that the completion of the four-floor modern edifice has attained an advanced stage but left with minor fittings.
“The work on the facility is quite advanced. Most of the infrastructures are in place; we just need to put some fittings in, do some finalisations, tidy up everything, and I think it should be up and running in about two months”.
Ogboye was amazed at the satisfactory level of work carried out so far. He said the Epe MCC like others that have been commissioned during the present administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is an improvement on the earlier ones which are consequent upon the lessons learned for improved service delivery.
He noted that the soon to be completed Epe MCC has all the alternative power supply one could imagine such as electricity from the National Grid, a standby Generator, Solar Power and an Inverter. These power sources, he said, would solve the challenge of power outage for better service delivery.
“Definitely we learn from each MCC that we have commissioned and one major thing we do is to give all the alternatives of power when we set up an MCC. For this MCC, we have electricity from the Grid, a Generator, Solar power and then an Inverter. This also goes for each of the new MCCs that are coming up on stream.
“We are learning even how to distribute services and how to distribute space amongst the different departments, so definitely we are learning from each one and we are putting the learning into the next one we are doing”, he said.
Dr Ogboye further hinted that the plan of the Governor Sanwo-Olu led administration is to have a maternal and child centre for every division of Lagos. The idea, he said, is to ensure that the State indices for maternal and child health improves well, while women of childbearing age and children have seamless access to a satisfactory maternal and child healthcare services that would ensure mothers and their babies are alive and well.
While he pleaded with residents to protect the asset and establish a cordial relationship with workers, he also added that the completion of the facility and commencement of operation would substantiate the safety of pregnant women in Epe and ensure that their antenatal, as well as post-natal care needs, are ascertained.
“I would like to use this opportunity to ask the Epe community to please protect this asset. They should see it as their own and see the people working here as their family. So help us take care of them and take care of the facility”, Ogboye stated.
At completion, the Epe MCC would be the third MCC to be accomplished by the present administration besides those of Eti-Osa and Badagry MCC recently commissioned.
Ekohotblog gathered that Ogboye was accompanied on the facility inspection tour by the General Manager, Lagos State Infrastructure Management Agency (LASIAMA), Ms. Nike Adekanbi; Director Health Care Planning Research and Statistics, Ministry of Health, Dr. Dayo Lajide and a team from the Project Unit in the Ministry of Health.

The school principal said the students had discipline issues that were being dealt with.

The Nigerian government has received the repatriated Ife terracotta head and other artifacts from the Kingdom of Netherlands.

Mr Lai Mohammed, who is the Minister of Information and Culture, took delivery of the artifacts on Thursday at an event in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Netherlands Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr Harry Van Dijk, presented the valuable pieces of art to the minister on behalf of the government of the European country.
The terracotta head from Ile-Ife in Osun State, a unique and rare artifact, was intercepted by Dutch Customs at the Schiphol Airport in 2018.
The event was also attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyeama, as well as Professor Abba Tijani.
Professor Tijani, who is the Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, stated that the Ife terracotta head was said to be at least 600 years old.

SPEECH BY THE HONOURABLE MINISTER OF INFORMATION AND CULTURE, ALHAJI LAI MOHAMMED, WHILE RECEIVING AN IFE TERRACOTTA ANTIQUITY RETURNED FROM THE KINGDOM OF THE NETHERLANDS….IN ABUJA ON THURSDAY, 26 NOV. 2020
Protocol
It gives me profound joy to receive this very important antiquity, an Ife Terracotta, which is dated to be at least 600 years old.
I am even more delighted that our efforts at pursuing the return of Nigerian antiquities, which we launched last November, have started yielding fruits.
You will recall that at the World Press Conference held for that purpose in Lagos on November 28, 2019, I asserted that Nigeria will work towards the return and restitution of her cultural property wherever they may be in the world.
That assertion was not a fluke, as we have seen today.
Our resolve to seek the repatriation of our timeless and priceless artifacts was strengthened by Mr President’s marching order for Nigeria to tap into tourism and other fields, where Nigeria has comparative advantages, in order to generate income for the nation and secure jobs for our youths.
One way of generating income for the country is if our cultural properties are exhibited around the world to a fee-paying audience, on the basis of proper agreement that acknowledges us as owners and confers the right benefits on us.
But this is not possible for as long as most of them adorn the museums and private collections of others, who describe them as their properties.
Today’s event marks a new beginning. Our antiquities must work for our progress. Apart from the pecuniary benefits, these priceless objects wrought by our forebears are unifying factors.
It is heart-warming to note that the leadership of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments is showing renewed efforts at repatriation.
Regarding the antiquity that is being handed over to us today, the smuggler had obtained forged documents purported to be from a former Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.
The smuggler ultimately passed through the airport in Ghana before getting to Europe in 2019.
The Dutch Customs at Schiphol Airport suspected that the object might be illicitly imported and alerted the antiquity protection office known as the Inspectie, which is the Information and Heritage Inspectorate of the Netherlands, to give an opinion.
The Inspectie invited Nigeria to prove her case against the suspected smuggler. The National Commission for Museums and Monuments (NCMM) acted swiftly by dispatching its lawyer, Mr Babatunde Adebiyi, who is with us here today, to present evidence and argue for the return of the object.
Nigeria was successful in this and the claim was determined in favour of Nigeria.
After all internal procedures, including the right of appeal, were exhausted, the Government of the Netherlands – at a very elaborate event – handed over the object to the Nigerian Embassy in the Hague on November 2, 2020.
The Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr Geoffrey Onyeama, made all possible arrangements to ensure the return of the antiquity to Nigeria.
He directed the Charge d’Affaires of our Embassy in the Netherlands, Mr Kabiru Musa, to bring back the antiquity, which we are receiving today.
We want to most sincerely thank the Honourable Minister of Foreign Affairs and his staff, both at home and in the Netherlands.
We also thank His Excellency Harry van Dijk, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Nigeria.
Our gratitude also goes to the Director and officials of the Information and Heritage Inspectorate of the Netherlands, officials of the Customs of the Netherlands as well as the National Museum of the Netherlands for rendering preservation and conservation assistance while the adjudication of the claim lasted.
The Inspectie, that is the Information and Heritage Inspectorate of the Netherlands, and the National Commission for Museums and
Monuments of Nigeria have agreed to make a joint presentation of this issue to the UNESCO Secretariat in Paris, so that other nations may take a cue from this in finding rapprochement and common ground concerning the issue of return of antiquities.
Let me state here that Nigeria believes in joint international efforts to put a stop to illicit export and import of cultural goods.
The issue of cultural property should not be a ground of rancour and discord among nations. That is if nations choose to tow the path which the Kingdom of The Netherlands has chosen by insisting on justice, fairness and amity.
I thank you all for your kind attention.

Congratulating all the winners at the final event of the competition, the Managing Director/CEO of UBA Foundation, Bola Atta, applauded all the participants for their exceptional brilliance. She explained that the Foundation had taken into consideration the effect that the Covid-19 pandemic has had on lives and incomes across board and had increased the prize money by 33 per cent this year to help cushion any negative or inflationary effects.
Emphasising the driving force behind the annual competition, she said, “We are passionate about the annual NEC because it changes lives and helps to improve the quality of lives of students and their families. The NEC helps to improve the quality of writing and competitiveness amongst students. We have launched in more African countries this year and would have launched the initiative in 20 countries by the end of 2021. It is not just about writing essays, the ripple effect is really quite enormous, and we are glad that it is cascading to other countries where we operate.’ she said.
Also speaking at the opening of the event, the Group Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of UBA Plc, Kennedy Uzoka, commended all 12 finalists, expressing that UBA was happy to be touching lives and making a solid impact through its National Essay Competition, which is now in its 10th edition. He was very pleased about the fact that more females again came out tops this year, adding that notwithstanding the constraints and challenges of 2020, the Foundation received the highest number of entries ever, at over 12,000 digital submissions’.
Mr Uzoka, who is also the Chairman, UBA Foundation, said, “The NEC has been changing lives positively for 10 years, and we have awarded scholarships to students not just in Nigeria but in other parts of Africa like Ghana, Sierra Leone and Senegal. Some of these students are already graduates and contributing meaningfully to their communities’.
“To all 12 of you that have emerged finalists, I would like to congratulate you. If out of 12,000 entries you were able to make it to the top 12, that represents about 0.12% of the entries. You are no doubt, already a winner,” he continued.
UBA Foundation’s National Essay Competition is an initiative under the Education pillar of the Foundation. Now in its tenth year, the aim of the NEC is to ensure that more African youths have access to education. The programme also highlights the good quality of education that exists on the continent as it stresses that the grant must be used in any university of the winners’ choice on the African continent.
